Athens Technology Center (ATC) and Deutsche Welle (DW) have been awarded co-funding from Google’s Digital News Initiative (DNI) to develop “Verify.Media“, a set of digital tools aiming to aid journalists in assessing the trustworthiness of news content found in social media.
When newsworthy events occur, social media “floods” with a variety of information, which often stretches from misinformation to superficial knowledge, or speculation. To tackle this, ATC and DW are using their successful history as a basis for working together on a social media verification platform. The goal of the partnership is to develop and ultimately provide verification tools that can be integrated seamlessly into journalistic workflows.
Mr. Nikos Tsabourakis, ATC’s CEO stressed the impact this project is expected to have in daily journalistic workflows, along with the strategic importance of this project for ATC: “This cooperation aims to strengthen journalists’ groups worldwide by allowing effective and easy confirmation of the content published in social media. This funding is another proof of ATC’s extensive media industry expertise, and will help us further expand the functionalities of our state-of-the-art technology for news management and confirmation.”
In accordance, Mr. Guido Baumhauer, DW Director Distribution, and Technology stated that “one of our strategic objectives is to expand the dialogue with our users and share the content they generate. The review of such content is crucial. Funding from Google helps us to accelerate this important development and we are grateful for the recognition of our innovation potential in this area. “
